The Price of Milk
A fantastically weird romance, The Price of Milk is set on a New Zealand dairy farm and vividly evokes the day-to-day running of the business. Rob and Lucinda are the soon-to-be-married couple running the farm, a pair of kind-hearted softies who know all their cows by name (or number). Their world is shown to be fairy-tale-like, but things start falling apart when Lucinda runs over an elderly Maori woman.
Whimsical, peculiar and featuring a score of Russian romantic compositions, this is a film full of startlingly beautiful images and a brilliant colour palette which showcases the beauty of New Zealand’s rural landscape. Surreal humour runs through the whole thing, making this a difficult one to categorise. But there’s no need to pigeonhole a film for it to be enjoyable and this certainly is.
